Dilworth Kitchen & Fireplace Remodel

Dilworth Kitchen & Fireplace Remodel

While the appliances remained in their original locations, removing an overbearing, U-shaped peninsula in exchange for an island significantly increased traffic flow and improved the functionality of this Dilworth kitchen and living room overall. Extending the cabinets to the ceiling maximized storage and display space for their colorful glassware collection. Inspired by their living room art and furniture, the teal island adds an unexpected jolt of personality into the space, which is repeated in the subtle texture of the handmade glass tile backsplash.

A pair of conveniently located pull-out storage cabinets provide accessible symmetry in the kitchen island. Trays, cookie sheets, and cutting boards are stored on the left side while herbs, spices, and oils are stored on the right side—within easy reach of the cooktop. Shelves underneath the cooktop, and drawers on either side, house pots, pans, and casserole dishes and utensils.

To keep coffee and bar items hidden, but easily accessible, we designed a tall cabinet featuring a glass roll-out tray for the coffee maker. Pocket doors on either side don’t block traffic while the cabinet is open. Three easily adjustable roll-out shelves below the coffee maker store coffee, mugs, vases, and pitchers. Liquor bottles and mixing accessories are kept on a high shelf out of reach from little hands.

Cosmetic Fireplace Update

To get a more transitional look in the kitchen and living room, the traditional fireplace mantel and surround was replaced with a three-dimensional, split-faced marble tile and reclaimed beam mantle. Carrying the tile from the hearth to the crown molding gives the fireplace more of a presence and helps to balance the scale of the oversized wall sconces on each side.
