Historic Plaza Midwood Home Addition

Historic Plaza Midwood Home Addition

After remodeling the kitchen and main level a few years prior, this young family invited us back to begin the design and construction of phase two of their historic home addition in Plaza Midwood. It included a two-story master suite addition with a laundry room upstairs and an expanded living space and rear mudroom below. High on their list of requirements for their new spaces were many windows to take advantage of the natural light afforded by their corner lot; a double vanity and double shower in the main bathroom; and a farmhouse-inspired aesthetic that still felt appropriate for their colonial revival home.

The window and door placement, and the exterior materials and proportions all required approval by the Historic District Commission. Working with them proved to be quite a challenge, and it took a considerable amount of time, but the resulting two-story home addition meets all of the requirements for both the city of Charlotte and the growing family who calls it home.

“This is our second time using ReVision Design on our historic 1930’s home. We’ve had wonderful experiences on both occasions. We just completed our second remodel which included a second-story addition, sunroom, mudroom, master bedroom suite, and laundry room. We highly recommend this team for anyone looking for quality work in Charlotte that sticks to their timeline. Our project was completed before the estimated timeline.”

A Neutral Palette Stands the Test of Time in this Historic Home Addition

To bridge the new space with the old one, and create a cohesive atmosphere throughout the entire home, a neutral palette of soft black and cream paired with natural textures can be found throughout.

Shiplap walls in the addition give the space a sense of casual character and age that fit with the feel of the house. The width of the new hardwoods was matched to the narrow boards of the original home, and a traditional grid pattern was specified for the windows and doors. The result is a home with all the character and charm of its historic roots, with new spaces for functionality and modern living as well.
